‘A reading room was formally opened in Chilmark by Mr Hugh Morrison, as a place for men and boys of the village to profitably pass their winter evenings.
The Earl of Pembroke offered a suitable plot in the centre of the village where old stone was used for the building.
Donations from friends in the village were used to provide substantial furnishings’
