  1. David Blake says:

“New Discoveries and Perspectives on the archaeology and history of the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”

This event is being held at the Nadder Hall in Tisbury on the 23rd July, 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. It is part of British Archaeology Week and also part of the 30th Birthday of our AONB; celebrating the fantastic landscape in which we live.

    Speakers include:
Emma Rouse, from the AONB, who is an excellent speaker and will be talking about “Years and Years of Mans
Thoughtful Foot – conserving and enhancing the archaeology and history of the AONB”

There will then be some presentations from some of the most eminent archaelogists working in this area:

Dr Martyn Barber, English Heritage, will describe his recent discoveries from aerial photography; did you think that there was nothing left to find?
Dr Mike Allen on “New findings from the Wor Barrow” and introducing us to the people who lived here in the Neolithic.
Dr Helen Wickstead, Kingston University, wuill be talking about the work she is doing on the Damerham long barrow – if you have ever wanted to be involved in an archaeological exploration, this is your chance!
David Roberts & Patrick Morton, University of York, will be talking about the Teffont Valley and why its been a bordeer area for thousands of years, and also what that means for our present landscape.
Dr Mike Allen & Dr Julie Gardiner, will be talking about the original landscapes of Cranborne Chase and the Wylye Valley before they were farmed.
Dr Martin Papworth, National Trust, will be talking about the Iron Age people of this area – the Durotriges – what happened to them and their world when the Romans invaded.

There are not many chances to listen to all these people, all in one place, in one day. So if you have even a passing interests then please book on to the event by calling the AONB Office on 01725 517417 or emailing info@cranbornechase.org.uk.

David Roberts, of the Teffont Archaeology project, will also be holding an open day on the 24th July. This is being held at Home Farm, Teffont Evias, Salisbury SP3 5RG between 13.00 and 16.00 on the 24th July. This would provide an excellent opportunity to follow up on one of the lectures from the previous day. Information is available on the project website http://www.teffont.org.uk/news-and-events/ or by emailing info@teffont.org.uk.
